Children’s Discovery Museum Of The Desert

You know you’ve found a good museum when your kids ask to go back the very next day. That is what we found in the Children’s Discovery Museum of the Desert.

I’ve been to my fair share of children’s museums but the Children’s Discovery Museum of the Desert was a wonderful surprise.

Located in Rancho Mirage (just a few miles from Palm Springs) the museum looks more like an office building when approaching it for the street. However, once inside, you find a most interesting layout. The building actually has three different buildings with two main exhibition halls.

The outdoor area has shaded tables for eating and toys to play with.

In between the buildings is a grassy shaded area full of hands on toys and activities to play with.

We tried the building on the right after paying our very reasonably priced admission fee. We were greeted by  a maze of walls where little vignettes of exhibits were around every corner. Each station was very clean and well kept.

What I Really Liked

Short Instructions on the Exhibits

If they had any instructions at all, the exhibits gave you just enough info to really allow you to experiment. This was very different from every other children’s museum I had been to in the past. Usually there are step by  step instructions and what everything is and does and by the time you finish reading it, your kid has moved on to the next thing. Here, they understand the child’s attention span and by  playing with the objects rather than listening to how they should play with it will be much more valuable to the child.

 Clean, Well Stocked and Maintained

It could be the lack of children (we were there on a Saturday and it was very quiet), but everything was in order and had all its parts. A far cry from many other children’s museums we’ve visited.

Hands On and Bodies On

You can paint a Volkswagen Beetle, or climb a rock wall.

This was their favorite thing in the museum.

So many of the exhibits allow you to climb in and on them.

An actual police motorcycle is there for the kids to crawl all over.

You Can Build, Or Play With What’s Already Built

If your kid likes to build electronics, they can start from scratch to build a working slot car. If your kid doesn’t like to build, they can grab one already made and race it.

Little ones can play without having to know how to build.

Cheap Gift Shop

The gift shop at the museum had lots of educational toys and they were the most reasonably priced I had ever seen in a museum gift shop.

There was so much for all ages to do and play with the kids were sad to leave. We will definitely be visiting this fun museum again. Have you been here? Let me know what you thought about it.

Military Discount

There is a military discount for up to 4 guests per military ID. I used my spouse ID when buying the tickets and had no problem getting the discount.
